More than you ever wanted to know About Moi
Just read the bolded and save yourself 10 precious minutes. Schooling and Work
- Currently an undergraduate Biochemistry student at the University of Toronto. Considering it was the only school I ever had any interest in, its surprising that some days I regret it more than others. Those are usually test days. I KNOW I would regret it if I wanted Med School.
- I used to work in retail, and though I was thankful for the fact that I had the job, I hated it more than most would. Never again.
- I worked in a lab in the summer doing various tasks that my supervisor Robert asked. First time I enjoyed working, and you don’t work to hard and theres the potential of spending hours on the internets depending on the experiment. Also, I was given mice (that were going to be euthanized anyway) to practice tail-vein injections on. I’m a terrible person; I’ve probably killed upwards of 60 mice. I’m going to hell.
- Now I have a part-time job working in a lab in the same building as one of my classes making agar plates for possibly the nicest and most easy going boss you could possibly have. I love this job (most of the time, right now I’m pissed because I haven’t gotten paid this month)
Beliefs and Politics (sometime interchangeable, never avoidable) My Golden Rule: As long as it does no harm to another or yourself, do and say whatever the hell you want.
- Religion: None; Agnostic. In theory I’m cool with organized religion, but in practice I dislike it. I understand the hope and order it brings to people’s lives, and I respect that aspect of it and support my friends who come from all sorts of religious backgrounds. However, too often for the wrong reasons, literal interpretations cause bigotry and violence, and I do not believe that following man-made rules will bring me any closer to God.
- Abortion: Pro-choice. This isn’t pro-abortion, but freedom for the woman to choose. However, I wish that society would change the message of abstinence to one of safe sex, so that women wouldn’t have to end up making that choice.
- Pre-Marital Sex: I don’t care if YOU wait until your married all you want, that’s none of my business. But don’t judge others who have sex without a wedding band. Sex and marriage are different. Have all the sex you want, get married once if you can.
- Homosexuality and Gay-Marriage: “As long as they don’t make it mandatory, who cares?” Honestly, if this were the 50’s, I’d be upset that black people didn’t have the same rights as white people. I feel the same way about homosexual rights; though I’m not myself, I see no good reason as to why they shouldn’t be allowed to get married and have a family. People’s ignorance about this pisses me off.
- Economics: I honestly don’t know much about it, but I know that the impact of our ultra-high consumerism culture on 3rd world countries is devastating and completely wrong.
- Global Warming: It’s happening. Stop driving your fucking hummers and turn off the lights in your 50 room mansion. We need to take care of this Earth; it’ll cost more at the beginning to “go green” (which is such a lame phrase, but whatever), but the longterm savings I’d imagine are worth it. Plus, you know, keeping the planet inhabitable for humans is a big plus.
Popular Culture
- Movies: I have no particular genre I like or dislike; everything comes down to the movie itself. That being said, I rarely like pure sports movies (save Remember the Titans) or un-stylize, unfunny action movies. Some of my favourites include;
- Rocky Horror Picture Show, Pirates of the Caribbean 1 & 3, Sweeney Todd, Mean Girls, Kill Bill Vol. 1, Silence of the Lambs, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Erin Brockovich, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Moulin Rouge! and I’ll think of some more later.
- Television: My favourite show of all time has to be Buffy the Vampire Slayer. No other show has ever rivaled my love for it, so even though I haven’t watched more than a couple episodes in the past year or so, I still can’t deny it its rightful place. Right now, Dexter is seriously compromising my ability to study; I absolutely adore and am obsessed with this show. Some other shows that I like(d) include:
- Angel (obviously), 24, Dead Like Me, House, Heroes, Everwood, Joan of Arcadia, Will and Grace, Friends, The Simpsons, Family Guy and South Park to a lesser extent, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and a show I watch despite the fact that I think its terribly written is Smallville.
- I’ve probably watched 90% of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart episodes since March 2003, and I also sometimes watch the Colbert Report, though he can wear on me a bit.
- Music: As of the past year or so, my genre has been Classic Rock because I love it and hate most of the crap spewing out of the Top 40 stations these days. Queen is my favourite band, not only because Freddie Mercury = God (minus all the ‘blasphemy’…kidding), but because they have probably the most variety in their songbook I’ve ever encountered. Coming close to them in that respect is my second favourite band, The Beatles. I used to think they were uber popular with old people because old people hated the music of our generation, but when I acutally listened to their stuff and realized how radical and diverse it was, I fell in love with it very quickly. Third is a weird choice, considering the two previous; Evanescence, which is basically “The Amy Lee Band.” I want to pull an Ursula and steal her voice and store it in a seashell. Other notable artists I like, but can’t rank, include:
-
- AC/DC, Alanis Morissette, Bette Midler, Blink 182, Bon Jovi, Christina Aguilera, Coldplay, Elton John, Eminem, Goo Goo Dolls, Green Day, The Guess Who, Guns’N'Roses, Janis Joplin, Jewel, Jimi Hendrix, John Williams, Led Zeppelin, Linkin Park, Madonna (ashamedly), Michelle Branch, Mika, Nickelback (people say their songs all sound the same, but I like that sound so I don’t care), Pink, Pink Floyd, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rihanna, Shakira, Stephen Lynch (a singing comedian who makes me almost piss my pants), Steve Miller Band, Supertramp, The Who. I can’t believe anyone read all that.
- Books and Authors: I’ll admit it; even though I really enjoy reading, the only for-pleasure books I’ve completed in the past 5 years is Harry Potter (by JKR, duh) and the “Fearless” Series by Francine Pascal. I liked the Da Vinci Code, but I wouldn’t make it one of my more notable reads. I need to get cultured and read some of the classics like Alice in Wonderland, the Picture of Dorian Grey, and Frankenstein.
- People: Right now, my main man is Johnny Depp. It’s funny because I liked him as an actor long before I watched Pirates, but I didn’t know that the guy from “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?,” “Edward Scissorhands,” “Chocolat,” “Sleepy Hollow” and “From Hell” were all the same guy. But I liked him every damn time. Therefore, I am better than all those little 13 year old girls who fawn over pictures of him in their agendas during Sex-Ed. *nods*
- I’m also a huge fan of Brad Pitt. I think that between Johnny and Brad, there is the highest Acting Talent:Sexiness ratio Hollywood knows in males at the time.
- I think Orlando Bloom is a doll; but he’s also a lucky SOB.
- Anthony Hopkins will always have my respect.
- Helena Bonham Carter is currently one of my favourite actresses, but I usually don’t pay attention to actresses.
- Jon Stewart can do no wrong in my eyes.
- Stephen Lynch is hot, can sing, and has songs that push the boundaries of “should be censored” to whole new level; he’s great.
- Freddie Mercury and Amy Lee are my idols when it comes to male and female vocalists.
- I would give anything to meet J.K. Rowling and thank her for the last 9 years of wonder and enjoyment; I couldn’t have imagined my transition from child to adult without Harry Potter.
- Joss Whedon is the Creator of Buffy and Angel. ‘Nuff said.
